Dive In Deep with Special Summer Workshops for Violin and Viola Students

Violin and viola players currently with or without a private instructor are welcome to enroll in a series of summer workshops on different technical and repertoire topics. Recommended for “serious students” age 11 to adult.

Depending on the topic, one to three students may share a 45-minute lesson session. Additional students may attend a session if the topic lends itself to group instruction. Topics Include:

• Setup for Success (1 session, 1-3 students): Improve posture, bow geometry, left hand alignment and relaxed playing through exercises and games. Levels 1-3.

• The Tone Triangle, and Improving Intonation (2 sessions, 1-3 students): Learn the three ingredients for beautiful tone, and how to listen for great intonation. All Levels.

• Rapid Repertoire (3 sessions, 1-2 students): Learn a short solo piece at your technical level. Students sharing a class must play the same instrument (violin or viola) and learn the same repertoire. All Levels.

• Super Shifting (3 sessions, violins only, 1-3 students): Begin or complete your journey up to 3rd position. Level 3 and up.

• Fun with Fiddle Tunes (2 sessions, groups welcome): Introducing a variety of fiddle tunes to learn by ear or with sheet music. Preferably students sharing a lesson would both play the same instrument. Level 3 and up.

• Orchestra Excerpts (2 sessions, violins only, groups welcome): Will use Mrs. Melin’s own published collection of famous orchestra themes suitable for intermediate players, and cover “orchestra etiquette” to be a great team player. Includes a 30-page book. Level 4 and up.

• Band Jam (3 sessions, groups welcome): Learn to play pop-style or worship music as if you’re in a band, using lead sheets with chords for harmonizing. Students with prior experience can play from lyrics+chords sheets. Level 4 and up.

• Advanced Fiddle Tunes (2 sessions, groups welcome): Will use Mrs. Melin’s own published collection of fiddle tunes with advanced techniques and rapid tempos. Violists must be able to read and play in treble clef. Includes a 34-page book. Level 4 and up.
